Brushing Or Flossing ? What Comes First?

Balance
After most dental visits, you are often told to brush and floss. There is much more that you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It matters more that you brush and floss more than in what order. You can use xylitol gum which has been found to reduce caries (cavities). It may even be a better substitute for fluoride (Fluoride is the reason for warning labels on back of toothpaste). After brushing and flossing, a water pik and tongue cleaner seemed to be rarely used. Be consistent, brush regularly for at least three minutes, floss and use regular proper hygiene products that will help keep gums and teeth healthy. It only takes about six hours for plaque to rebuild after brushing your teeth, so establish a routine that works for you and have regular checkups with your dentist.

Why Regular Dental Treatment is Important

Dental-treatment1

Our teeth are lifelong partners of ours, especially if we love to eat. Having only two sets in our lifetimes, first are the milk teeth while the second and last are our permanent teeth, it is therefore important to be able to take of them as best as we could. Otherwise, a life of dentures awaits.

LIving with dentures is not a good thing. Imagine having to take out your teeth every night before going to bed, then having to put them on in the morning. Now, sometimes we forget our keys at home and so it’s not far from us to forget our teeth just before leaving the house. Imagine the flushness of our faces then when we attempt to smile. A toothless grin worthy of a mendicant down at the subway. Then there are the denture pastes that keeps dentures in place, that’s an added purchase and hassle as well as the cleaning solutions. Lest we forget too those socially awkward situations where our dentures might get loose and fall down in the middle of a formal dinner. Now, are you ready to tackle all these things?

Having regular dental treatment is very important if we want to keep our pearly whites. Of course just as important is our daily oral hygiene. Brushing three times a day, flossing everyday, gargling and eating healthy food are all important. However, these acts of taking care of our teeth are not enough. Pretty soon, plaque and tartar build up will occur no matter how diligent we are with our brushing and flossing. When these problems arise, the time to get dental treatment has arrived.

Bi-annual cleanings of our teeth by our dentists is recommended. Called prophylaxis, this detailed cleaning makes sure that the accumulated plaque and tartar build ups are removed leaving us with clean, sparkling and healthy teeth and gums. Though one might argue that we can remove these build ups ourselves, those who think that, I ask you, have you ever tried to remove tartar from your teeth?

Tartar on our teeth are like barnacles on a ship. Pretty crusty and very hard to remove. If one would attempt to remove it himself with a special tool, he or she may succeed however, the risk of removing the enamel of your teeth is there. And if the enamel is stripped off, our teeth become as vulnerable as a wet kitten in the middle of a busy highway. That is to say, it can be saved, but only if someone acts fast.

So if you love your teeth, and you love yourself, go and take care of your teeth with regular dental treatment combined with good daily oral hygiene practices. Teeth are an extension of ourselves. They are part of us. And we need them though we don’t appreciate it till we lose them.

CEREC

Most dental restorative methods require more than one visit to the dentist. This means that on the first visit, you get an injection of anesthesia, your tooth prepared, an impression taken, and a temporary restoration put on your tooth. You make a second appointment for a couple of weeks later, get another injection, have the temporary pried off and have a permanent restoration put on. With CEREC, the procedure is done in a single appointment, start to finish. With CEREC, the Dentist can use strong, tooth colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function.

Finest Dental Materials:

These materials match the composition of natural tooth structure. This means when hot food or cold drinks are consumed the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates. Also, the materials are chemically bonded to your tooth, so the dentist can save as much healthy tooth tissue as possible while providing you with a dental restoration that strengthens your tooth.

Let Us help you Overcome Your Dental Phobia

F21

From a fear of spiders to a fear of heights, nearly everyone has something that causes them anxiety. However, avoiding spiders certainly doesn’t pose any health risks while avoiding your dentist can be very detrimental.

It is estimated that 9% to 15% of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of dental phobias that cause anxiety and fear – that amounts to approximately 30 million to 40 million people! (Colgate). The causes of dental fear range from worries about the level of pain one experiences while others are simply embarrassed or self-conscious about the state of their teeth. Concerns such as lack of control and fear of the unknown are often enough to keep a person from seeking needed treatment. Even the close proximity between patient and dentist can cause anxiety and prior bad experiences at the dentist can result in future apprehension to visit (Colgate).

By delaying, or forgoing dental care all together, the risk of gum disease and tooth loss greatly increases. As studies have shown, the systemic connection between oral health and overall health is another cause for concern – aside from dental issues arising, heart conditions and lung infections stemming from poor dental health can become exacerbated over time, even life-threatening.

Despite these risks, the level of anxiety many people experience when thinking of visiting the dentist is enough to dissuade them from regular check-ups. At Dental Health and Wellness Boston, helping patients overcome dental phobias is a passion of Dr. Smith’s. We offer anxiety reduction and sedation dentistry techniques to make your dental visit comfortable, and we discuss in detail, our plans for your dental care before any treatment begins. Creating a trusting relationship with our patients is key to providing the best dental care possible, with personalized plans to address any concerns and minimize dental fears that may have hindered oral health in the past.

Coffee reduces the risk of oral cancer

source : Dentist

Studies have shown that coffee may receive dental care in reducing the risk of developing cavities. Now there’s even more good news for java junkies. The researchers found that drinking too much coffee actually reduces the risk of cancer of the mouth and throat.

http://fashionmagdaily.com/wp_fsimages/woman_drinking_coffee.jpgThe results highlighted in WebMD, people who drink more than four doses of coffee a day are almost 40% lower probability of contracting cancer of the mouth or throat, compared with people who do not drink coffee. For those who drank less than five cups of coffee per day, the level of protection was reduced to 4% less likely to be significant in the mouth and throat cancer for every cup of coffee consumed per day. Protection for oral and pharyngeal cancer was evident, but the protection against cancer of the larynx was not.

protective effect of coffee has been shown to remain intact, even for smokers and drinkers, although tobacco and alcohol are associated with cancer of head and neck. Furthermore, the protective effect did not show an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, which are also known to protect against cancers of the head and neck.

Researchers at the University of Milan arrived at these results, when analyzed 5139 new studies comparing people with head and neck cancer in 9028 people without cancer.

 http://www.manoneileen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/cupcoffee1.jpg

So, what ingredient in coffee is responsible for reducing the risk of oral cancer? The study rejected the caffeine as a likely possibility, because drinking tea, even in large quantities, not protection.

The researchers noted that coffee contains hundreds of chemicals. Of these, cafestol and have anti-cancer. However, future studies should determine more decisively whether these chemicals actually protect against cancer in humans.

Previous studies have established Trigonelline Wired magazine, an alkaloid found in coffee as an agent for preventing dental caries. While the ingredient is known to give a flavor of coffee, he also tried to prevent the formation of craters on the teeth, preventing tooth decay-causing bacteria Streptococcus drilling teeth.

The American Dental Association reminds us that coffee can not only create optimal oral health. Actually, too much coffee can stain teeth. The ADA recommends that traditional dental care includes brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly.

TMJ Dentist Melbourne

Experiencing frequent headaches, migraines, dizziness, a stiff neck, back pain, ear ache and / or popping and clicking jaw-joints?

You may be one of the many undiagnosed TMJ Dysfunction sufferers. Today, in our stressful society frequent headaches and migraines have become a common occurrence. Most are dismissed as nothing; however they may be a symptom of TMJ Dysfunction. At Holistic Dental we acknowledge the need for TMJ treatment and are dedicated to helping patients resolve and cope with this condition.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ) is the term utilised to describe conditions affecting the Temporomandibular Joint. The Temporomandibular Joint is the point at which the jaw opens and closes. This condition is caused by bad bite and results in chronic facial pain for the sufferer. Patients who grind teeth during their sleep will feel further pain and discomfort.

Stress is the key contributor in the development of TMJ. The external influence of anxiety results in clenched jaws and tight shoulders. By clenching your jaw you may be compressing jaw points. In which case the back jaw ligament will stretch and become inflamed. Your jaw disc may also become dislocated; resulting in a popping sound when you open your mouth widely (whilst talking, eating or yawning).

With the assistance of high tech equipment and our Comprehensive Examination and Diagnosis procedures we are able to determine the causes of your problems and treatment plan for long term definitive solutions.

Melbourne Dental Implants Dentist

Dental Implants are a permanent solution to replacing lost or rotted teeth; helping you to recapture the beautiful nature of your smile. Looking and feeling natural; Dental Implants can help prevent further deterioration of your teeth and give you something to smile about.

A Dental Implant is a man-made replacement for the root of a tooth, which is surgically inserted into the jawbone. As the mouth heals, approximately two to six months after surgery; the bone and Implant begin to fuse together. Once healing is complete, the Implant is then used to anchor Crowns, Bridges or Dentures.

At Holistic Dental we understand that the loss of a tooth can be a devastating occurrence. Your teeth play an extremely important role within the body and the loss of a tooth can lead to several changes within the mouth. Some of these changes may include;

We are also able to bring you the latest in implant technology with the New Nobel Biocare System for dental implants. Using state of the art high tech equipment, the latest implants can be immediately and precisely placed with flapless surgical techniques. In some cases we can also place esthetic restorations immediately.

Throughout your Dental Implant procedure every possible step is taken to make you feel comfortable and at ease. Precise post-surgical instructions are given to all patients; ensuring healing occurs quickly and effectively.

Root Canal Dentist

Root Canal Treatment is necessary when the nerve of a tooth (or pulp) becomes diseased or infected. In such cases the nerve of the tooth must be removed.

If a patient's tooth pulp becomes irritated, bacteria will begin to grow within the tooth. This growth results in pressure and causes pain as well as possible facial swelling to the patient. If a Root Canal is not performed, eventually bacteria will destroy the pulp. The bone structure around the tooth will then become infected and will inevitably lead to tooth loss. Previously if a tooth became infected or diseased it would have simply been removed. Today however, every possible step is taken to save all teeth and keep you with your natural teeth for life.

To conclude if Root Canal Treatment is necessary x-rays would be taken at your dental consultation. After which point a series of appointments would be assigned to you for your Root Canal Treatment.

Throughout your Root Canal Treatment Holistic Dental will ensure every possible step is taken to make you feel comfortable and at ease. We will make certain all of your questions and queries are answered and that we work together as a team to preserve your teeth.

Why is Oral Hygiene so Important During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a very exciting and busy time. There are so many changes going on in your body and your mouth is no exception. Good oral hygiene is extremely important during pregnancy because the increase of hormone levels during pregnancy can cause dental problems to be intensified.

One of the most common dental problems associated with pregnancy is a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis, which usually occurs during the first trimester. Symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis are usually bleeding, swollen, red and tender gums.

Good oral health during pregnancy could also be important to your fetus. Some researchers have suggested that the serious stage of gum disease, periodontitis, could cause premature birth and low birth weight.
The tips listed here can help you maintain good oral health throughout your pregnancy.
·         Visit your dentist for regular check ups and cleanings. This is the best way to make sure that you are maintaining good oral hygiene.
·         Brush your teeth properly at least twice a day to remove plaque.
·         Floss your teeth daily. Flossing will remove food debris from in between the teeth that a toothbrush can't reach.
·         Use an antimicrobial mouth rinse. Antimicrobial mouth rinses can help prevent gingivitis.
·         Brush or scrape your tongue daily to help remove bacteria.
·         Eat nutritious meals and healthy snacks.

Now that you know what to do to protect your oral health, sit back, relax and enjoy this beautiful time in your life.

Sedation Dentistry

For a more relaxing, painless treatment, Sleep Dentistry is your answer.

Sometimes dental treatment can be difficult such as removal of wisdom teeth, and some of you may be very anxious about having treatment due to previous bad experiences.

Fortunately Sleep Dentistry (Sedation) is now available and almost all treatment can be done while you are completely relaxed and without any knowledge or memory of the treatment provided.

The advantage of Sleep Dentistry is that the patient is still conscious and able to assist the Dentist in any way by responding to instructions and questions.
