To begin you must floss your teeth at least five days each week. The best time to floss is in the evening because it removes food particles from between your teeth that contribute to plaque as they sit in your closed mouth for 8 hours, percolating, while you sleep.
Flossing your teeth, as part of a teeth cleaning at home program, is a quick procedure. People often complain that the process takes too long, or they dont have the time each night. But, flossing really only takes about 2 minutes once you have learned the procedure and performed it. Like anything else the more you do it, the better you become.
Flossing your teeth will also help to eliminate any difficulties you might have with bad breath. Dont believe me? Just smell that dental floss after youve flossed two or three teeth. That rotting food between your teeth contributes to bad breath every day.
Once you have flossed you should rinse with mouthwash. The mouthwash should NOT have alcohol in it. Most of the commercial based mouthwashes do however. And alcohol in the mouthwash contributes to dry mouth and bad breath. Chronic exposure to the alcohol in the mouthwash will also cause some damage to the tissue in the mouth.
Some dentists will tell you that mouthwash in a teeth cleaning at home program isnt necessary. Many people, though, find that rinsing before brushing decreases the time the dental hygienist spends cleaning their teeth every six months.
Once you have flossed and rinsed it is time to brush. Use a toothbrush that has a soft head so you dont damage the gum line or scratch the enamel of the teeth. Leave the hard bristled toothbrushes for cleaning around the sink in the bathroom. There is controversy about the use of fluoride in toothpaste, especially if you live in an area that places fluoride in the drinking water. The toothpaste is used to soften the plaque so the brush can sweep it away. If you can stand it,baking soda makes a great toothpaste. It just isnt as sweet tasting as the store bought brands. sure that you rinse your mouth well after brushing. Brush your teeth in the morning after awakening to get rid of the bacteria that grew there when you werent eating and drinking. Then in the evening you can floss, rinse and brush. Many people find that brushing their teeth after lunch helps to curb their snacking in the afternoon.
