Overcoming Dental Phobia

Fear of dentists is very common, but it doesn't have to rule your life and health. Taking the time to talk to your dentist about your fears can help you conquer them.
We all have those ready excuses. You know the ones, "Is it that time already?" "I can't go; I have an important meeting this afternoon." Or, maybe you've tried to be honest and said "I don't have time for that." While some of these excuses are honest, they are mainly there to cover fear. Dentists are the most dreaded type of doctor around for many people, and not many are willing to own up to that fear. There are ways to overcome that fear so that you can go more regularly and have a healthier mouth because of it.

First you need to be honest with yourself. You don't have to tell everyone in the world that you fear the dentist's chair and why, but you do need to tell yourself. If you don't, there is no way you can overcome your fears. For most people, the fear is associated with the pain. Many patients have a negative experience in their past where they suffered from some pain either during or after a procedure and got little relief. Often during a procedure you can't tell dentists that something is going wrong, and this is a great source of anxiety for many people.

The first step to getting the control that you long for when dealing with dentists is being assertive with your doctor. This doesn't mean that you should go in and be bossy to him, but rather that you need to talk to him. Tell him that you have a problem with not being able to communicate to him during a procedure. You may be pleased to find that the two of you can work out a system where you can let him know if something is wrong during the procedure so he can stop and adjust so that you are more comfortable. This will give you more control over the situation.
Your dentist might also have other solutions that will help you during your time in the chair. One of the most popular forms of dentistry right now is sedation dentistry. This allows you to be completely under during all procedures. While you might still have some discomfort following the procedure, you won't suffer from the anxiety related to excess pain during the procedure. It's a relaxing way to have your teeth worked on without worry.

The best thing that you can do to overcome your fear of the dentist is to be honest with yourself and all dentists. Some doctors forget that not everyone has the same threshold for pain and discomfort. Unless you are open with him and remind him that you are an individual who feels things differently than others may he will never know. He will also never know that he is hurting you unless you tell him. Take the time to talk to your oral health care professional before the procedure starts so that you will both have an easier time. If your doctor is unwilling to listen or make adjustments so that you are not on the verge of a panic attack then it's time to look around through listings of dentists all over again.
